Percy Jackson finally has a return date. The upcoming third season, based on Rick Riordan's The Titan's Curse, will officially arrive on Disney+ earlier than expected.
The new season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians will premiere on Nov. 20 on Disney+. That's about a month earlier than usual for the series, which debuted its first two seasons in late December. The Season 3 premiere date was shared as part of Entertainment Weekly's interview with series lead Walker Scobell and executive producer Craig Silverstein.
Why Is Percy Jackson Returning Earlier Than Usual?
No reason was given for the earlier premiere date. However, it doesn't take more than a quick look at the upcoming release calendar to see why Disney+ decided to move up Percy Jackson's return.
The first season of HBO's highly anticipated series adaptation of Harry Potter is set to premiere on Dec. 25. That's right around the time that Percy Jackson is usually midway through its season. Percy Jackson and Harry Potter are two major fantasy series with an overlapping fanbase. Disney+ likely moved Percy Jackson Season 3 to November to avoid competing with Harry Potter at all.
Of course, there is always competition. Percy Jackson Season 3 will now premiere on Disney+ the same day that Sunrise on the Reaping hits theaters. Like Percy Jackson and Harry Potter, The Hunger Games is another major page-to-screen franchise. Luckily for Disney, fans will likely see Sunrise on the Reaping once in theaters, meaning that they will then be free to watch Percy Jackson Season 3.
The Titan's Curse Finally Gets Adapted
Percy Jackson Season 3 is set to take the franchise into uncharted waters. It will be the first adaptation of Riordan's third Percy Jackson novel, 2007's The Titan's Curse. A film adaptation was originally planned at 20th Century Fox, but was ultimately never produced.
In The Titan's Curse, Percy Jackson embarks on a dangerous quest with his friends to rescue Annabeth and the Greek goddess Artemis, who have both been kidnapped by the army of Kronos. Logan star Dafne Keen will make her series debut in Season 3 as Artemis.
Artemis isn't the only God set to appear in Season 3. Apollo (Hubert Smielecki), Hera (Ming-Na Wen), and Aphrodite (Kate McKinnon) will also be joining in on the action. Jennifer Beals has also been cast as Demeter.
Silverstein teased to EW that the third season includes an Olympian Council scene with the show’s entire cast of deities "all in one room" together. That implies that Jason Mantzoukas, Adam Copeland, Timothy Omundson, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Toby Stephens, Courtney B. Vance, and Andra Day will also be back as Dionysus, Ares, Hephaestus, Hermes, Poseidon, Zeus, and Athena, respectively.
The first two seasons of Percy Jackson and the Olympians are streaming on Disney+. The third season premieres on the streamer on Nov. 20.
