Running back Kenneth Gainwell isn't receiving nearly as many headlines as some of his teammates, but his versatility may make him one of the Buccaneers' secret weapons this season.
More than just insurance for Bucky Irving
At just 27 years old, Gainwell still has plenty left in the tank. Unlike many running backs his age, he hasn't spent his career carrying the workload of a featured back, which means there's less wear and tear on his body.
Gainwell is also coming off a productive 2025 season, totaling more than 1,000 yards from scrimmage and eight touchdowns. Those numbers demonstrate that he can be much more than a complementary piece when given opportunities.
While Irving is expected to remain Tampa Bay's number one back, NFL seasons are long, and injuries are inevitable. Even the league's best backs benefit from occasional rest throughout a 17-game schedule.
If Irving needs a break during games or unfortunately misses time due to injury, Tampa Bay won't have to dramatically alter its offensive game plan. Having a capable veteran behind Irving could prove invaluable late in the season.

Perhaps Gainwell's biggest strength is his ability as a receiver out of the backfield. In today's NFL, running backs who can catch passes are incredibly valuable, and Gainwell gives Mayfield another reliable option when defenses take away Tampa Bay's talented group of receivers.
If Egbuka, Chris Godwin Jr, or Cade Otton are covered downfield, Gainwell has the ability to turn a simple checkdown into a significant gain. His versatility should make him a valuable option on third downs and in two-minute situations.
Gainwell can also contribute in the red zone. He has shown throughout his career that he can handle carries near the goal line and find the end zone when called upon. The Buccaneers don't need to put unnecessary wear and tear on Irving when they have another capable playmaker who can produce in short-yardage situations.
Kenneth Gainwell may never lead the Buccaneers in rushing yards, but he doesn't have to. If he helps keep Irving fresh, gives Mayfield another receiving weapon and delivers in key situations throughout the season, he could quietly become Tampa Bay's secret weapon in 2026.
