I’ve spent my summer oscillating between breathable pull-on pants and heatwave-proof babydoll dresses, reaching for shorts only when I go to the pool or gym. But Teyana Taylor just wore an outfit-elevating pair I might need to add to my everyday lineup.
While in New York City for a screening of her upcoming film 72 Hours, Taylor went for a look that was polished yet very cool (though, I don’t think it’s possible for her to not look cool). She wore a slightly oversized, double-breasted blazer as her top and pair of Bermuda-length trouser shorts. And to bring a modern feel to the dapper, albeit sexy outfit, she added a pair of dramatic pointed-toe heels and giant aviator sunglasses.

Look, I’ve always had a tricky relationship with shorts. Denim cut-offs leave me, with my wide thighs and big butt, feeling way too exposed, while calf-length culottes completely overwhelm my petite frame. But Taylor’s trouser-inspired pair, which had a wider leg and hit just above her knee, might offer the perfect middle ground. It certainly doesn’t hurt that they also look quite chic (well, chic for shorts).
Taylor might have convinced me to finally grab this style, but she’s not the first person to wear long, wide-leg tailored shorts. The bottoms have been trending since spring, with everyone including Jennifer Lopez, Eva Longoria, and Zendaya reaching for the shorts that are equal parts dressy and summer ready. And if you’re nervous about styling them, I have good news: Despite their buttoned-up appearance, they’re very easy to wear. On a hot day, you can pair them with a simple white tank and leather flip-flops. And for the office, consider a tucked-in button-down or a blazer and white tee, finished with a belt and kitten heels.
