A mom from Tennessee allegedly gave police a shocking response when questioned about shooting a man who she found hiding under her daughter’s bed.
Kendra Scott, 36, is facing one count of first-degree murder and another count of using a firearm for shooting 20-year-old Rodderius Morton, according to the Memphis Police Department. The incident took place last Wednesday, and when police reached the house around 1:45 a.m., they found a dead man on the porch.
According to an arrest affidavit, the man who was later identified as Morton, was “suffering from a gunshot wound to the back of his head.”

Scott told officers that she came home and “saw a dude under my kid’s bed,” according to the affidavit.
“I did what I had to do,” she then allegedly told police.
The affidavit alleged that Scott’s child told police that she had invited Morton over to her house at around 1:20 or 1:30 a.m. She told police that Scott previously said that if she “sees a boy in my house I will put a hole in his ass,” the affidavit claimed.
The girl alleged that she became frightened when she heard Scott yelling outside the door, and when she opened the door, Morton hid underneath her bed, the affidavit claimed.
Police said that as Morton attempted to leave the house, he was shot on the front porch.
Local outlet WMC spoke to retired law enforcement officer and self-defense expert Buddy Smith, who reportedly said the details available at the moment may not support a self-defense claim.
“The affidavit does not allege that he threatened the mother or anyone else at that time, and those alleged facts will likely be important issues for the court, and ultimately a jury,” he told WMC.
Another local Memphis outlet, WREG, spoke to a woman named Robin Perkins, who identified herself as Morton’s former special education teacher. Perkins reportedly claimed the man who was killed on Scott’s porch had “special needs” and expressed her belief that the encounter did not need to result in his death.
“Because the young man that I knew, most people, based off this story they don’t know the young man like I did,” Perkins told WREG. “I do not condone his actions of going and mingling with a 13-year-old... I found out last night from his sister that no one knew that he was gone from the house.”
During her court appearance on Monday, the judge set Scott’s bond at $100,000 and scheduled her next hearing for Aug. 3.
