Syracuse tight end leaving team to focus on sport where he was a top-20 recruit

Syracuse, N.Y. —Fran Brown’s Syracuse football roster is losing a tight end, but Gary Gait’s men’s lacrosse team is gaining a midfielder.

Redshirt freshman tight end Wyatt Bowman (6-foot-5, 235 pounds) will not play football this fall in order to focus on lacrosse, a Syracuse spokesperson told syracuse.com | The Post-Standard.

Bowman appeared in four games for the football team last season, making his debut against Colgate before playing in SU’s final three games of the season in losses to Miami, Notre Dame and Boston College.

Syracuse’s tight end room includes Western Kentucky transfer Noah Meyers, a redshirt junior who received praise from quarterback Steve Angeli at the ACC’s media days and could be in line to be the starter.

Angeli also said he’s ready for senior David Clement to show his abilities as a receiver this season.

SU’s tight end room also includes sophomore Daunte Bacheyie, redshirt sophomore Elijah Washington-Baker and freshman Carter Bashir.

Bowman’s addition to the lacrosse roster gives Gait a midfielder with size and speed who was a four-star lacrosse prospect.

Bowman was once ranked as high as the No. 20 prospect in the country by Inside Lacrosse.

Bowman grew up in the lacrosse hotbed of Darien, Connecticut, rising up prospect rankings and leaving home to attend high school at lacrosse powerhouse Georgetown Prep in Bethesda, Maryland.

He initially committed to play lacrosse for North Carolina before getting an offer to play football for Syracuse.

Bowman told syracuse.com when he committed in June of 2024 that he wanted to focus on football initially but would reassess the idea of playing lacrosse after each season.

He did not want to take on both sports, unlike SU quarterback Joe Filardi, a long-stick midfielder on the lacrosse team.
