Notre Dame has long prided itself on being known as “Tight End U” because of how many players at the position it has sent to the NFL. Over the last few years, the Irish have struggled to keep that title, not because it hasn’t had plenty of talented guys manning the position, but because it’s struggled to have those talented guys stay healthy. In 2026, there’s a chance the Golden Domers could renew that beloved name thanks in large part to Ian Premer.

Just a true freshman, Premer is the kind of tight end who could become a real weapon once the 2026 season starts to unfold. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound former 5-star tight end from Great Bend High School (Great Bend, KS) came to South Bend as one of the best players at his position in the 2026 recruiting cycle.

Premer was ranked as the No. 20 player in the 2026 class, the No. 1 player at the tight end position, and the No. 1 player in the state of Kansas according to 247Sports Composite Rankings. Among the things that made him so attractive to Notre Dame when they were busy securing his commitment and then signature was that he was multitalented as a pass catcher, a runner, and even a defender.

In his senior high school season, Premer caught 49 passes for 734 yards and 14 touchdowns during his 2025 senior season, while adding 620 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground. Defensively, he recorded 68 tackles and six interceptions. As a junior in 2024, he caught 30 passes for 541 yards and 8 touchdowns, rushed for 260 yards and two scores, and added 50 tackles and 3 interceptions.

Ian Premer gives Notre Dame an immediate answer at tight end

His ability to make plays no matter where he is on the field certainly has his head coach singing his praises as he gets closer to his first fall camp with Notre Dame. During a recent conversation with several local media members, Marcus Freeman talked about how excited he was to see Premer do what he does best at the tight end position for a team looking for a new starter at the position.

"He looks ready right now,” Freeman told the media members. “I haven't seen him with pads on; I haven't seen him put his face in [someone else's], but he's smart. He looks ready."

It helps that Premer has leaned heavily into turning himself into an impressive specimen since signing with Notre Dame. He showed up to South Bend at 6-6 and 240 pounds. His frame looks like he could butt heads and shove people around right now. Add in his receiving skills, and that he understands better than most how defenders think about things, and it’s clear he can turn that into a massive season.

Notre Dame has a bit of a question at the tight end position in 2026. While it’s unlikely he’ll be the starter when the Irish start the year against Wisconsin, it doesn’t look like it will be too long before he’s the next in a long line of talent at Tight End U.
