The college football season is quickly approaching, and analysts are already beginning to discuss their favorites for the upcoming College Football Playoff national title.
During an appearance with “The Pat McAfee Show” on Wednesday, ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit identified Notre Dame, Miami and Texas A&M as his early picks to win the championship. The Fighting Irish were the first team he mentioned, followed by the Hurricanes and Aggies.
“I’m going Notre Dame,” Herbstreit said. “I like Notre Dame, I like Miami. I think Texas A&M, with Marcel Reed, could make a run this year.”
Herbstreit named these three programs over other favorites like Ohio State, Texas, Oregon, Indiana, Georgia and more.
Notre Dame was left out of last year’s College Football Playoff field despite winning each of its final 10 games to closeout the season. The selection committee snubbed the Fighting Irish due to back-to-back season-opening losses against Miami and Texas A&M.
Miami played its way to the College Football Playoff national championship game, where they ultimately lost to Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza and the 16-0 Hoosiers. Texas A&M lost to the Hurricanes in the opening round of the postseason, marking their second straight loss after beginning the season with an 11-0 record.
