Southwest and American Airlines operations were upended on Tuesday, as the North Texas carriers combined to cancel more than 400 flights nationwide as sever weather was forecast for some of the East Coast.
American, which operates its central hub at DFW International Airport, appeared to be affected at airports in the Northeast, including in Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., New York and Boston. In Philadelphia, American Airlines and its wholly-owned regional carriers PSA and Piedmont combined to cancel more than 200 flights, according to flight tracking site FlightAware. FlightAware showed that Southwest, which is based at Love Field, suffered more than 100 cancellations in Baltimore, where it holds a significant presence.
The New York Times reported that the Northeast region could be pummeled by heavy rain and powerful winds.
American issued a travel alert allowing customers to change their travel free of cost if they're traveling through several airports in the Northeast. Southwest is also offering customers traveling through multiple East Coast airports the opportunity to rebook their flight, and even receive a refund, if eligible.
Both American and Southwest's operations at the two major North Texas airports seemed to be operating smoothly, with less than 60 cancellations combined at DFW and Love Field as of 4:20 p.m.
