LeBron James has still yet to announce his free agency decision, now weeks removed from informing the Los Angeles Lakers that he intends to play his historic 24th NBA season elsewhere.
Prominent figures from around the basketball world — including Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal — have been asked to weigh in with their thoughts on James’ highly-publicized free agency process.
O’Neal believes James’ decision will come down to wherever he has the best chance to win another NBA championship.
“Knowing LeBron, he’s going to go somewhere he can win another ring,” O’Neal said during an interview with ExtraTV, via SI.com. “Miami, Golden State, maybe even Philly. What we realize toward the ends of our careers, once we’re done we can never play again. You never wanna retire and say, ‘I shoulda did this, I shoulda done that.’ He still has two, three years I think.”
O’Neal then pushed back against critics who may call this “ring chasing.”
“A lot of these haters call it ring-chasing,” he added. “But yeah, you’re supposed to be chasing rings, because if you chase rings and you accomplish getting rings, that’s what we call greatness. Those who haven’t achieved greatness call it ring-chasing because they haven’t achieved greatness.”
The Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and Philadelphia 76ers have been reported as the frontrunners to land James in free agency. The Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves have also been mentioned in multiple reports.
There’s still no timetable for James’ decision, according to his agent, Rich Paul.
