The 32-year-old man was wanted for a fatal 2017 hit-and-run.

A San Francisco man accused of fleeing the country after a fatal 2017 hit-and-run in South San Francisco has been returned from Israel to face charges, police said Tuesday.

Maher Abedelal, 32, was booked into the San Mateo County jail on July 14 on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter in the death of 44-year-old Teresa Gonzales, of South San Francisco.

Gonzales was struck shortly before midnight on Nov. 11, 2017, in the southbound lanes of the 200 block of El Camino Real, according to South San Francisco police.

Officers found her unconscious in the roadway. She was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where she died.

Investigators identified Abedelal as the driver and determined that he fled the United States days after the collision, police said.

Authorities obtained a felony warrant, but Abedelal remained at large for several years before he was recently located in Israel.
