After she dropped her first single “Mean It” in 2019, Gracie Abrams went on somewhat of a hair transformation journey before landing on her current bixie cut, which she wears for her new album Daughter from Hell. Shorter hairstyles may not immediately come to mind when thinking of a pop star, given the popularity of hairography, but that might just be why it has become one of her unique trademarks over the years.
The bixie style is not without its fair share of upkeep, but it seems the singer is dedicated to it. She recently told Vogue, “I’m not very tolerant of growout, so if the back of my neck starts to know for even a moment that there is hair, I’m like, ‘chop it.’”
While Abrams is now known for her short bixie haircut, she’s tried and tested a couple of different styles throughout her career. Some people grow their hair longer over the years, but Abrams has notably gone shorter instead. From her first big chop in summer of 2023 while opening for Taylor Swift on the Eras tour, Abrams has tested the waters with different iterations of the bob, so her shorter cut wasn’t completely out of the blue. “I have found as I have continued to cut my hair off, I feel more like myself,” Abrams recently said in conversation with Olivia Rodrigo on Spotify's "Countdown To."

In January 2020, Abrams attended Spotify’s Best New Artist with soft glam, including long brown hair styled in loose waves at the end, the perfect complement to her floral dress.
September and October 2021
For her 2021 festival run, Abrams kept the styling simple, opting to wear her hair in casual styles like messy curls or pigtail braids.
July 2022
On bigger stages for the 2022 festival season, Abrams went for more intentional looks, like these picturesque waves for Lollapalooza.
January 2023
Abrams welcomed 2023 with her hair cut just a bit shorter. The difference was subtle but perfect for her edgy Saint Laurent look at Paris Fashion Week.

But a week later, she was back on the stage with a dramatic hair transformation. She chopped her hair short into a long, shoulder-length bob. Whether styled with flicked ends and a bow or lightly curled, this cut was the perfect gateway to her shorter looks.
February and March 2024
In 2024, Abrams went even shorter. She cut her hair into a more traditional bob falling right at chin-length. She completed the look with soft curls at the ends for special events like the Grammys and Fashion Week.
March and May 2024
Shorter hairstyles don't mean updos are out of the question. Abrams wore an elegant low bun to the Vanity Fair Oscar Party 2024 and dabbled with a side part at the Met Gala 2024.
May and July 2025
2025 saw Abrams experiment with more updos, but the most notable was the half-up, half-down look. It was a total scene-stealer at both the Cannes Film Festival and the Chanel show.
October 2025
By the end of 2025, Abrams slowly started to make her way into bixie territory. She performed at Vogue World: Hollywood with an ultra short bob.

By January 2026, Abrams was rocking the bixie we all know her for today at Chanel events. (She told Vogue about Matthieu Blazy's reaction as she continued to cut her hair shorter.)
February and March 2026
On red carpets, she styled the bixie asymmetrically, letting a longer face-framing piece loose while the rest of her hair was swept back.

This week, as she’s promoting her new album, she’s simultaneously proving that headbands work for short hair too. She’s giving the preppy accessory a bit of edge with her bixie cut.
