The Seattle Seahawks are just a couple of days away from kicking off training camp for the upcoming 2026 NFL season. This marks the first stage of the Seahawks’ quest to defend their Super Bowl title from a year ago, which they won in dominant fashion against the New England Patriots.
It was an outstanding year in 2025-26 for quarterback Sam Darnold, who silenced all of his doubters dating back to his early days, when he was labeled as a draft bust, and recently, Seahawks wide receiver Cooper Kupp stopped by ESPN’s The Pat McAfee Show and got 100 percent real on the veteran QB.
“I’m really thankful that we have Sam Darnold in Seattle.. He was written off and his path has maybe never been replicated in the NFL before.. I have so much respect for him and the way that he plays the gam,” said Kupp, per Pat McAfee on X, formerly Twitter.

Darnold isn’t the first high draft pick to struggle early in their career and then find success later on, a formula that was also replicated by Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield. However, the sheer dominance that he and the Seahawks put on display throughout the 2025 season was something to behold, particularly in the NFC Championship Game, when Seattle’s elite defense struggled a bit, but Darnold’s brilliant offensive game gave the team just enough to advance to the Super Bowl.
While Darnold’s performance on the game’s biggest stage was a tad underwhelming, he still by and large played OK, which was all Seattle needed in order to earn a dominant victory over New England.
The Seahawks will face the Patriots once again in a Super Bowl rematch to kick off the NFL season on September 9 in Seattle.
