Sarah Ferguson‘s declaration about her relationship with Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is being called out.
According to royal author Andrew Lownie, the former Duke and Duchess of York weren’t the “happiest divorced couple” she claimed they were.
Sarah’s remark was a ‘a convenient cover’
Following Sarah and Andrew’s divorce in 1996, the mother-of-two claimed she and her ex-husband maintained a great dynamic.
“It had been a convenient cover and helped generate positive media headlines,” Lownie told the Daily Mail.
“But the reality is the couple very quickly after their wedding were having affairs,” the journalist claimed.
Sarah wanted ‘royal connections’ from Andrew
While the matriarch insisted she and her former spouse are on great terms, Lownie alleged that was only so she could stay in the royal inner circle.
“The only reason Ferguson continued to cadge accommodation from him was that it saved her money and burnished her royal connections and her money-making activities,” he told the publication.
The ex-duo lived together for years after the end of their romance and share two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.
Sarah and Andrew’s downfall
In October 2025, Sarah and Andrew were stripped of their titles and evicted from Royal Lodge due to their connections to Jeffrey Epstein.
“For Fergie, the guidance would be to separate her identity from his as much as possible, but quietly,” public relations expert Renae Smith told Daily Express.
“Fergie’s situation is actually more complex, but in my opinion, still very constrained,” she said. “From what’s publicly available, there is nothing I have seen that suggests direct wrongdoing on her part. Admiration or proximity to Jeffrey Epstein reflects very questionable judgment, but not equivalence. That said, of course optics matter.”
Andrew once called Sarah a ‘fat cow’
According to royal journalist Tina Brown’s book, The Palace Papers, Andrew said derogatory statement about the mother of his kids to a media executive.
During the 2015 incident, Sarah and an anonymous person were sitting and chatting when Andrew entered the room.
“What are you doing with this fat cow?” the 66-year-old asked reportedly asked the executive about his former flame.
