Something’s different about Conan O’Brien, and fans are in a frenzy over why he hasn’t addressed it.
The former late-night host surprised viewers with his appearance on Monday, July 20’s episode of “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend.”
During his interview with Molly Shannon, O’Brien showed up with his hair combed flat instead of his usual pompadour updo.
Fans react
Team Coco fans flooded the YouTube comments to react to O’Brien’s new hairstyle.
“Greaser Conan isn’t real. He can’t hurt you,” one wrote, while another quipped, “If this is Conan’s new look he needs a gold chain.”
Others joked that he was “auditioning for the Irish spin off of The Sopranos” or had the energy of a car salesman. “Why does he look like I’m about to be sold a used Kia Sorento,” one comment read.
Begging for answers
Many listeners said they were more distracted by the fact that nobody on the podcast addressed the glaring change.
“Sitting here watching thinking, are we just ignoring his hair?” one commenter wrote. Another added, “I’m expecting a dedicated segment about Conan’s hair at this point. Really, nobody says a word?”
“We ALL clicked for the hair and theres just NO explanation???” one fan exclaimed. “TEAM COCO PLEASE.”
O’Brien stays silent
So far, O’Brien hasn’t said why he decided to switch up his hair. However, he did post a photo to X of himself smiling alongside Shannon.
Some fans guessed that O’Brien had just stepped out of the shower before the interview, and that his usual poof would bounce back later on.
“Maybe we just got a window into his styling process,” one comment read. “I think we’ve all left the house with wet hair before.”
Part of the brand
O’Brien’s hair has been part of his brand for years. It’s always been styled standing tall, so watching it get combed down definitely threw people off.
Even the late-night host has previously joked about his hair having a mind of its own.
“As [my pompadour] grows it’s crumbling under its own weight,” O’Brien quipped while in quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
“I consulted a structural engineer, he said there’s too much on top and it’s starting to come over, and that’s what’s happening right now. The pompadour cannot sustain the gravitational pull.”
