There are two key elements to the technology, and as its name suggests, they’re based on titanium. One is the new titanium alloy film, and the other is the enhanced titanium plate, which are essential to the display structure of the new Galaxy Z phones. Combined, the two allow the new phones to be thinner than before, but remain as durable as ever.
The titanium alloy film is about 70% thinner than a human hair, but it is still 20 times stronger than the conventional polymer film used before. Thanks to this element, the crease remains less visible over time, essentially making the display last longer without being damaged.
Another effect of the new material is that the titanium alloy film doesn't stretch in the same way as the plastic polymer does, so it doesn't change its mechanical qualities as much and continues to support the OLED panel better over time.
Samsung is specifically proud of the titanium plate, which is the reason the display gets a flatter and more uniform surface. That’s why the crease is less visible to begin with, not only over time. The new materials strengthen the support of the display, which helps absorb pressure and impact.
It opens better
Flex Titanium is also part of the reason opening the new phones feels better. The new structure helps with the balance of the redesigned hinge mechanics, display tension, and magnetic force, leading to a smoother, lighter, and more natural opening of the phones.
My colleague Victor said he’s finally in love with how the Galaxy Z Fold 8 unfolds, after hating opening the Z Fold 7. While the new hinge is not the only reason for his claim, it certainly adds to the experience.
Samsung also says Flex Titanium provides an immersive viewing experience by allowing users to fully enjoy the quality of the display. The company says the technology is the result of it listening closely to the consumer feedback from its earlier foldable devices.
Unsurprisingly, that made it discover people expect larger displays, a more immersive experience, a less visible crease, and higher durability of their devices.
The only downside
Smartphone improvements are often paired with some sort of compromise, and that's the case with Flex Titanium as well. Being based on titanium, which is a metal, the new technology is the reason the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra don't support S Pen.
Samsung will most likely continue to use the same technology in the coming years, so we shouldn't expect for the stylus to return to its foldable. I'd say this is a fair price to pay for getting a more durable and stiffer display.
