Better late than never. The new Galaxy Z8 Series is all using silicon-carbon batteries! After years of asking Samsung why they weren’t using silicon-carbon batteries, and ultimately being told they were testing them back at Unpacked in February, they are now available in the Galaxy Z Flip 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8, and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.
This explains why the two fold models got larger batteries while getting thinner. Though the Galaxy Z Flip 8 is using the same size battery, it is a bit thinner at 6.1mm (vs 6.5mm on Galaxy Z Flip 7). Now, I know what you’re thinking: only 5,000mAh as a silicon-carbon battery? When HONOR is doing 6,660mAh on a thinner foldable, OPPO is doing 6,000mAh on a foldable of the same dimensions, and Samsung is stuck at 5,000mAh.
Well, the silicon content in these batteries is quite low. So low in fact, that they are still classified as lithium-ion. This is likely why Samsung did not mention it during our briefing; I found out later on during our hands-on time.
Samsung is easing into the silicon-carbon trend
Samsung is easing into bringing silicon carbon into its batteries for its devices, and it makes a lot of sense as to why. Of course, Samsung is still thinking about the Galaxy Note 7, even though that was exactly 10 years ago now. But Samsung also moves a lot more units than other companies that are using silicon carbon.
I was told by Samsung that we will see more of their products adding silicon carbon batteries in the future. While they didn’t mention which ones, they also told me that they are well aware of their battery capacities being a big sticking point for many customers. So in short, Samsung is listening!
Could we see a battery over 5,000mAh next year on the Galaxy Z Fold 9 series? It’s quite possible. Though with how well Samsung optimizes its software for battery life, that might not be a huge deal.
