Sammy Brown confronts last season's failures and the burning need to overcome adversity

Dabo Swinney did not mince words when he called Clemson’s seven-win season what it was: unacceptable by Tiger standards. At ACC Kickoff, linebacker Sammy Brown echoed that sentiment, making it clear that anything short of championship football is not good enough in Clemson. Brown did not dodge the tough questions about last year, instead offering a blunt, honest look at where the Tigers stand and what needs to change.

"Yeah, Like I said, Clemson has a standard. And last year, we were not even close to the standard. So I think there are a lot of aspects from last year that we really need to get better at. And I think we've done a great job this off season of improving that. Even stuff as small as communication, stuff like that. They say that this game is a game of inches, so stuff like that really makes a huge difference."

Asked what it will take for Clemson to reclaim its spot atop the ACC, Brown pointed to the little things—the details that separate good teams from great ones. He knows the climb back starts with fixing the basics.

"I think it's not one specific thing. I think there's a multitude of many small things and when you stack those little things together, you get a big result."

Brown made it clear there is no time for self-pity in Clemson. Last season’s struggles are in the rearview, but the lessons from those tough moments are fueling the Tigers’ offseason grind.

"I think it's like you don't want to let last season go to waste. You want to, You want to take a lot of things from last year and apply them to this year. So, I think one of those things is, you know, We faced a lot of adversity last year, and a lot of that comes from, you know, things that we may not have done in the last off-season. So I think a lot of the guys understand that and I think they're really applying that to this off-season."

"You know, I think the biggest one is just, You know how to face adversity when it hits you, because whether it's playing football or whether it's in life, you're going to have adversity in your life. So I think understanding."

"How to face adversity, and how to overcome that adversity is one of the bigger lessons I learned last year."

Brown remembered how fast things unraveled last year, especially on the road. He stressed that the Tigers have to be mentally tougher this season, refusing to let one setback turn into a losing streak.

"I think, you know, A couple times last year when we faced adversity, it kind of just shocked us. Like we just stood back and then, you know, one thing turned into another, and then you know we lost at Georgia Tech. And then hey, the next week, we didn't even show up against Syracuse. So, you know, stuff like that- when adversity hits, just learning, how okay, it didn't go the way I wanted to. But I need to forget about it, put it in the past. And. And move on to the next play, the next game. And I think that's kind of how you can apply it to this year. Like, hey, last season didn't go the way we wanted it to. But, the team that played last year is not going to be the team that goes out there for the first game this year. So we can learn a lot of lessons from last year but also reset, refocus and this is a new year. Um."

"I mean, like I said, we really want to put that season behind us, but we don't want to forget it for sure. It definitely doesn't want to be your fire, but it can definitely be a little fuel to throw on that fire. So it's something like Clemson has a standard that needs to live up to. And I think the way that last year went is obviously not what we wanted, but I'm very excited to see what we can do this year."
