Sabrina Ionescu was reportedly invited to compete in this year's three-point contest but declined to participate. However, the New York Liberty star made it clear that she was never invited to join.
Ionescu addressed reporters and said she was surprised by the news. She added that she looks forward to seeing who among the participants will come out on top.
"I guess you can't really, at least personally, I can't decline an offer I never got officially invited to," Ionescu said. "So I was pretty surprised to see that. Never got invited. And obviously that's, you know, whether it's against Steph Curry or, you know, in the W, I always go out and try and beat my record every single time I've gone out.
"That was just false, but I'm really excited for the participants in it and obviously there's going to be a new winner, so I'm excited to see who wins."
On Tuesday, the Liberty guard replied to a now-deleted post from Bleacher Report W Sports. Ionescu commented, "lies," on the post, which reported that she, Caitlin Clark, and Kayla McBride all declined the WNBA's invitation to participate.
The four-time All-Star has participated in two WNBA 3-Point contests. She holds the highest score in a round in league history with 37 in 2023, knocking down 25 of her final 27 shots.
Ionescu won last year's contest by making 11 consecutive shots with a score of 30 in the final round. She also competed against Stephen Curry in the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend and recorded 26 points against the Golden State Warriors guard's 29.
