Rory McIlroy reveals family plans after ending major season

Rory McIlroy will return to the course on August 13 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, USA.

Rory McIlroy has realized throughout his career that priorities change, with age, his greatest focus is now on family.

The Northern Irish golfer ended his season at this year's The Open Championship, where he did not excel, finishing in 40th place. However, Rory McIlroy's season was filled with successes. The highlight of his season was a victory at the Masters, another in a series of Major victories.

Fans, journalists and pundits are wondering where Rory McIlroy will spend the next few weeks. The 37-year-old pointed out that he will not return to the cpurse before the FedEx St. Jude Championship. He said that he also wants to spend time with his family, that is, to celebrate his victory at the Masters.

“I haven’t really taken the time to enjoy that or celebrate that,” McIlroy said, referring to his Masters win. “Poppy’s got another four weeks off school until she goes back, sort of middle to end of August, so just going to enjoy the summer holidays with her and Erica. That’s what I’m looking forward to the most.”

Rory McIlroy on his friendly relationship with the Fleetwood family

Rory McIlroy now spends significantly more time with his wife Erica and five-year-old daughter Poppy, aware that priorities change with age.

Rory McIlroy spoke at the press conference about his friendly relationship with the Fleetwood family, with whom he has been very close for years. The popular golfer hoped that Tommy could achieve success at the last tournament and triumph, but he ultimately failed to achieve his goal.

McIlroy did share that he will support him before the final round.

Fleetwood and Rory McIlroy have homes at The Bear Club in Jupiter, Florida, while it's important to point out that their children grew up playing together.

“We’re very close with the Fleetwoods,” McIlroy said. “Poppy and Frankie are inseparable. Clare and Erica are best friends. Tommy and I have obviously got an amazing relationship that goes back nearly 20 years. He’s an amazing golfer. He’s just as good of a person as he is a golfer.

There’s a long way to go, but the McIlroys will definitely be cheering for Tommy,” McIlroy concluded.

His schedule

Rory McIlroy will return to the course on August 13 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, USA. It will be his first tournament since the break, and the event is the opening stop of the prestigious FedEx Cup Playoffs on the PGA Tour.

At the beginning of autumn, on September 10, McIlroy returns to his home course in Europe to perform at the Amgen Irish Open in Ireland in front of his fans.

On September 17, the BMW PGA Championship in Wentworth, England awaits him, a traditional and one of the biggest tournaments on the DP World Tour, where Rory is a regular participant.

He will play the last tournament of this period on October 15 at the DP World India Championship in India, a new tournament in his official calendar, before finishing the season with the final tournaments in the Middle East.

Season 2026

In 2026, Rory McIlroy has a historic career season, marked by winning another Masters trophy, but also by a drastic reduction in the number of tournaments. After years of waiting and enormous pressure, the Northern Irishman achieved his biggest goal this season, but completely changed his approach to the rest of the calendar.

The crowning glory of his season came in April 2026, when McIlroy played the tournament of his life and won the Masters at Augusta. It is his second consecutive and sixth Major overall in his career.

In the other three Major tournaments of the season, the PGA Championship, the US Open and the recently concluded Open Championship, he played solidly. At the last Major of the season, he finished in 40th place.

Having learned from mental fatigue in earlier years, Rory made a decision in 2026 to drastically reduce his number of appearances. By the end of July, he had played only 11 tournaments on the PGA Tour, which represents a significant change compared to previous seasons.

Because of this "frugal" model, McIlroy found himself in a situation where he risked violating PGA Tour rules, which mandate a minimum of 15 tournaments to retain full membership status. Even with three planned FedEx Cup tournaments in August, he would reach a total of 14 appearances, which is why his agents are currently seeking a special solution with tour management.
