Croatian tennis player Marin Cilic has announced that Vilim Visak is no longer his coach.
Visak, from Losinj, became part of Cilic's coaching staff in 2019, when the Croatian tennis player hired him to help him deal with his increasingly frequent injuries and fitness problems.
Initially, he was in charge of physical therapy and fitness, and in 2021 he took on the role of head coach. Their collaboration lasted seven years and ended this summer.
Cilic noted that they met as teenagers and that the journey together over the past seven years has been special. He singled out the journey to the Roland Garros semifinals, winning the ATP title at the beginning of his comeback from injury, and numerous other moments as his favorite memories.
The 2014 US Open winner and two-time Davis Cup winner thanked Visak for his friendship, support, and constant desire to progress, especially during challenging injuries. He added that their professional paths may cross again in the future.

Visak, a 40-year-old from Losinj who reached 370th place in the ATP doubles rankings and won ten titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour, thanked Cilic for the opportunity.
He stressed that it was an honor and privilege to coach a player of his caliber and that he was most proud of the fact that they went through all the situations together as a team. He said that the sports cooperation may end, but that the most important thing built over the course of seven years remains forever.
"When I look back at our beginnings, from that small shared room all the way to achieving great world-class results, it is incredible to see the circle we have closed. After seven beautiful years, our professional journey together is coming to an end. I want to emphasize that it has been an exceptional honor and a great privilege to coach Marin and collaborate with him over such a long and intense period.
Marin is an incredible athlete and an unparalleled professional—it was an absolute pleasure and a true joy to coach a player of his caliber. Thank you, my friend, for this wonderful journey. Our path was filled with challenges literally every single day. Professional sport at this level brings everything—together we experienced beautiful successes, starting from our first joint ATP title in St. Petersburg, through the Grand Slam semifinal at Roland Garros, all the way to that unbelievable title run in Hangzhou following a severe injury.
On the other hand, we also shared those tough, difficult days of battling injuries and sacrifices. What I am most proud of is the fact that we went through absolutely every situation together, as a team, never giving up.

The next step
The next step in Marin Cilic's career is to find a new coach and prepare for the North American tour on hard surfaces, with the main focus on the performance at the US Open. After ending the seven-year collaboration with Vilim Visak by mutual agreement in July 2026, Marin enters the final phase of the season with clear goals, but also open questions about his long-term future.
Cilic's current priority off the court is to choose a new coach who will guide him through the finish of this season. After an early exit at Wimbledon to Daniil Medvedev at the end of June, Marin is preparing for tournaments on hard surfaces in the USA and Canada, the surface that historically best suits his style of play and where he achieved the greatest success of his career by winning the US Open in 2014.
During this year's Wimbledon, Marin confirmed that his primary goal is to stay physically healthy and play the entire 2026 season until the end.
