Robbie Williams has laughed off the moment a white substance fell out of his mouth after the World Cup final.
The singer spoke to Magenta Sport, a German TV channel, after performing in the closing ceremony in New Jersey.
While the 51-year-old was talking to pundits, a white substance was filmed dropping out of his mouth and on to his microphone. He then picked the object up and proceeded to rub it on to his forehead, where it remained stuck.
Writing on Instagram on Monday, Williams said: “Just woke up and feeling… Mint.”
While apologising for being “unprofessional”, he claimed that the object falling out of his mouth had been “OK” because he had “several more”, before sticking out his tongue to reveal two mints.
Williams said: “I’d just like to apologise for the object that fell on to the microphone yesterday. I was deeply unprofessional, and people worried about me. But it’s OK. Because I had several more.”
Williams performed in a blue sequinned tracksuit at the final, singing alongside Nicole Scherzinger and Laura Pausini. The show also featured Madonna, Justin Bieber, all seven members of BTS, Shakira and Burna Boy.
At one point, Chris Martin of Coldplay joined the show at the New York New Jersey Stadium along with Muppets including Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy.
The long performance was part of Fifa’s transformation of the final to cater to American viewing habits and mirror the Super Bowl half-time show. It was the first time a World Cup final featured an American-style half-time show, requiring a 30-minute break rather than the regular 15 minutes.
Wayne Rooney, the former England striker who was at the stadium as a BBC pundit, said he thought the show was “crap”.
Bieber’s performance, which slowed the tempo with Everything Hallelujah, was one of the more controversial acts.
There were questions from some after the game over whether an acoustic guitar performance was the right choice for a crowd of football fans bracing for a tense second half in a World Cup final.
Critics of the longer half-time break argued that it violated football’s traditions and disrupted the game’s flow.
Writing for The Telegraph, Scott Parker, the former England midfielder, said: “It is a decision that has been made without the most important people in mind: the players.”
