The San Francisco 49ers’ running back Christian McCaffrey finished fourth in the MVP rankings last season. That was enough for the Denver Broncos’ RB, RJ Harvey, to take notice and study him going into the new season.
Talking to reporters during OTAs, RJ Harvey opened up about watching films of the league’s other RBs. A clip of him stating his process to get better was posted by Andrew Mason of Denver Sports’ 104.3 The Fan on X.
“Just watching more film, watching other guys around the league, watching their film. Watching a lot of film of Christian McCaffrey, Kenneth Walker, Jahmyr Gibbs, guys like that,” Harvey told reporters. “Just trying to see things that they do on film, trying to help better my game.”
While Kenneth Walker III won the Super Bowl LX MVP with the Seattle Seahawks, Jahmyr Gibbs, the Detroit Lions RB, ranked 2nd on ESPN’s top 10 RBs heading into the 2026 season list.
Christian McCaffrey, the son of Denver Broncos’ legendary former wide receiver Ed McCaffrey, was ranked 4th on the same ESPN list.
“In Year 2 in the system, I feel way more comfortable, and it’s only going to get better from where I left off,” RJ Harvey further added per Andrew Mason on X.
In his first year for the Broncos, Harvey accumulated 896 scrimmage yards and a team-leading 12 scrimmage touchdowns among RBs.
His performances will only have to keep getting better in his sophomore year. Some analysts believe that RJ Harvey could mean much more to the Broncos and starting QB Bo Nix this season.
If Harvey breaks out, Bo Nix could potentially fuel an MVP run
FanSided’s Mike Phillips recently included RJ Harvey in his list of the biggest NFL breakout candidates.
“Sean Payton envisioned Harvey playing the kind of ‘joker’ role that Alvin Kamara played for him in New Orleans, but he was eased into the NFL working behind J.K. Dobbins last season,” Mike Phillips wrote on July 17.
Harvey saw more snaps during minicamp, signaling a bigger 2026 role despite Dobbins’ return, per Phillips. Given Dobbins’ injury history, the Broncos could take off some of his carries.
RJ Harvey could take them instead.
With him already being a strong receiver, there is a formula available for a breakout season.
“And if that does happen, quarterback Bo Nix would truly have a chance to win the MVP award, as the run game was a huge issue last year,” Predominantly Orange’s Lou Scataglia stated.
Further, with WR Jaylen Waddle’s addition, personnel-wise, the Broncos really aren’t missing anything. This goes to show how impactful an RJ Harvey breakout season could be.
