A 15-year-old drowned Tuesday evening at Blue Lake Regional Park, the third drowning in Multnomah County in the past 10 days.

The boy had been at the Fairview park with family when he went under and didn’t resurface around 5:40 p.m., authorities said.

Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, Gresham and Corbett firefighters responded to the scene, according to Deputy John Plock, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office. Lifeguards from American Medical Response who had been stationed at Glenn Otto Community Park also responded.

Rescuer swimmers found the boy’s body around 6:25 p.m. He was not wearing a life jacket, authorities said.

Temperatures Tuesday reached 100 degrees in Portland. Hot weather often draws people to Oregon’s rivers and lakes, but experts urge caution around natural bodies of water.

Swim with buddies and always wear a life jacket. Water temperatures are colder than the air and cold water shock can set in quickly, causing even a strong swimmer to drown.
