Former NBA point guard Jason Williams has been retired from the league since the 2010-11 season when he split the year between the Orlando Magic and the Memphis Grizzlies. In the meantime, however, Williams has been a guest on the ‘Hoopin’ N Hollerin’ show as part of Barstool Sports. And during a recent episode, he raised some eyebrows in saying he’d take a young RJ Barrett over Hall of Fame point guard John Stockton.
Jason Williams was poised the hypothetical question of who he would rather have on a basketball team, a prime RJ Barrett or a prime John Stockton. For Williams, the current Toronto Raptors’ wing was an easy pick.
“It ain’t even got to be prime RJ Barrett, you can give me RJ Barrett in 11th grade,” Williams retorted.

Perhaps part of that answer came from Williams’ playing days when he was with the Sacramento Kings. During the early 2000’s when the Kings were trying to establish themselves as a contender in the Western Conference, they had to battle with an aging, but still formidable Utah Jazz team before getting to the level of the Los Angeles Lakers.
In 1999, the upstart Kings pushed the Jazz to five games in the opening round of the NBA playoffs before falling short. In 2002, when the two teams met again in the postseason, the Kings had traded Williams for Mike Bibby and were able to get over the hump and defeat the Jazz.
In addition to saying he’d take Barrett over Stockton, Williams also exclaimed that he supports players being able to play in the NBA out of high school. Back when Williams was in the league, players were allowed to enter the draft right out of high school.
