Boston now looks like one of the hottest teams in baseball and has positioned itself firmly in the American League playoff race, making aggressive deadline additions a realistic possibility.
The timing couldn't be better. While the Red Sox have received elite pitching and a revitalized offense during their recent surge, injuries continue to create uncertainty. Garrett Crochet and top prospect Roman Anthony are both expected to return later in the season, but neither has a guaranteed timetable, leaving Boston with reason to seek immediate upgrades.
Second base stands out as one of the organization's most pressing needs. Red Sox second basemen have struggled throughout the season, ranking near the bottom of Major League Baseball in offensive production. Improving the position could provide another boost to a lineup that has caught fire over the past month.
Several intriguing names could become available.
