The Baltimore Orioles continued adding organizational depth ahead of the MLB trade deadline by acquiring outfielder Rudy Martin Jr. from the Kansas City Royals. Although the move is not expected to have an immediate impact at the Major League level, it marks a significant milestone for Martin, who earned a spot on a 40-man roster for the first time in his professional career.
Baltimore immediately optioned the 30-year-old to Triple-A Norfolk after completing the deal. The transaction became possible after Martin triggered an upward mobility clause in his minor league contract, forcing Kansas City to either add him to its own 40-man roster or allow another organization to do so.
Martin has quietly put together one of the best offensive seasons of his career in 2026. Between Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha, the speedy outfielder owns a .284/.414/.441 slash line with eight home runs, 33 stolen bases, and an outstanding 16.1% walk rate, showcasing both patience at the plate and game-changing speed.
Originally selected by the Royals in the 25th round of the 2014 MLB Draft, Martin has spent more than a decade grinding through professional baseball. His journey has included stops in the Washington Nationals' farm system and the Mexican League before returning to the Royals organization on a minor league contract last season.
While Martin has never appeared in a Major League game, his athleticism and ability to get on base make him an intriguing depth option. Baltimore already features a crowded outfield that includes Taylor Ward, Colton Cowser, Dylan Beavers, Leody Taveras, Tyler O'Neill and Jeremiah Jackson, meaning Martin will likely need to continue producing in Triple-A before receiving a call-up.
The trade also coincided with a roster move involving veteran right-hander Chris Bassitt, who was officially transferred to the 60-day injured list as he continues recovering from back surgery. Bassitt has resumed throwing but is not expected to begin a rehab assignment before the end of July, creating the roster flexibility Baltimore needed to complete the transaction.
Although Rudy Martin Jr. remains an under-the-radar addition, the Orioles have built a reputation for maximizing organizational depth. If he continues to produce offensively while providing elite speed and defensive versatility, the veteran outfielder could finally earn the Major League debut he has spent more than a decade chasing.
