The 2026 MLB trade deadline is shaping up to be especially active for catchers. Multiple contenders—including the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays—are searching for upgrades behind the plate, while several high-profile backstops have become the subject of increasing trade speculation. At the center of those rumors is Baltimore Orioles star Adley Rutschman.
Although Rutschman remains under team control through the 2027 season, his long-term future in Baltimore has become a legitimate topic of discussion. The Orioles also boast top prospect Samuel Basallo as a potential franchise catcher, giving the organization flexibility as it evaluates its roster beyond this season.
According to ESPN, Baltimore is not actively shopping Rutschman, but the club is "definitely listening" to trade offers. The Orioles' recent surge in the standings, combined with Rutschman's placement on the injured list, has reduced the likelihood of a blockbuster deal. However, rival executives believe Baltimore would entertain the right proposal if it strengthens the club for both the present and the future.
Rather than targeting prospects, the Orioles are reportedly more interested in acquiring MLB-ready pitching that remains under club control beyond the 2026 season. With Baltimore aiming to remain competitive in the American League, controllable starting pitching would likely be the centerpiece of any potential Rutschman package.
Among the other notable names, Athletics catcher Shea Langeliers appears far less likely to move. Although MLB Network insider Jon Heyman recently reported that the Athletics were open to discussing virtually anyone following unsuccessful extension talks, ESPN reports the organization has informed rival clubs that Langeliers is not available. His team control through the 2028 season aligns perfectly with the franchise's long-term plans as it prepares for its move to Las Vegas.
Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman has also generated trade buzz, but league executives believe a deal remains highly unlikely. ESPN estimates only a 15% chance of Goodman being traded, largely because Colorado views him as a foundational piece for its future. The Rockies are focused on building a sustainable contender rather than simply collecting prospects.
As The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported, Colorado would require an overwhelming return to even consider moving Goodman. Instead of accepting several lower-level lottery-ticket prospects, the Rockies would seek multiple elite, MLB-ready talents capable of accelerating their rebuild. That asking price is expected to discourage contenders such as the Yankees and other playoff hopefuls looking for catching help.
With demand for catchers exceeding supply, the market could become one of the defining storylines before the trade deadline. Whether it's Rutschman's uncertain future, Langeliers' apparent untouchable status, or the steep asking price for Goodman, teams searching for a difference-maker behind the plate may ultimately have to pay a premium if they hope to complete a blockbuster deal.
