Coming into the 2026 season, Tarik Skubal had made back-to-back All-Star games and won consecutive Cy Young awards. His resume also included a Triple Crown, a season-leading baseball in strikeouts, and an AL wins title. All of that led to the Detroit Pistons star being viewed as not just the best pitcher in baseball, but one of the best players in all of baseball, regardless of position.
Skubal’s immense talent hasn’t prevented him from being involved in trade rumors. The Tigers struggled to start the season, and Skubal is a free agent at season’s end. Contenders around the league would love to have him, and the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves, Milwaukee Brewers, Philadelphia Phillies, and Tampa Bay Rays were reported as the pitcher’s top trade fits. So, here are each of those teams ranked in terms of what they could offer Detroit.
6. Milwaukee Brewers
Trade offer: Luis Lara, Jett Williams, J.D. Thompson, Coleman Crow

The Brewers are always one of the most unpredictable teams at the trade deadline. While they have been linked as one of the top suitors for Skubal, it is hard to predict what they’d actually be willing to give up. It is possible that the team wouldn’t be willing to trade their top prospect: Jesus Made.
Instead, a deal could be centered around Luis Lara, Jett Williams, J.D. Thompson, and Coleman Crow. That is a prospect-rich package but one that dwells in comparison to some of the other offer here. If Made was included in this trade offer, Milwaukee’s ranking here could be much higher.
5. Tampa Bay Rays
Trade offer: Caden Bodine, Michael Forret, Taitn Gray, Tre’ Morgan
Catchers with legitimate hitting potential are hard to come by. The Tampa Bay Rays have two in their system, and they might almost certainly have to part with one of Caden Bodine or Nathan Flewelling in a trade for Skubal.
The Rays could also move Tre’ Morgan and Michael Forret, two Triple-A players who are ready to become big league mainstays right away. The Rays have a history of diagnosing talent and developing it in their farm system, so trading with them could be viewed as a safe bet for the Tigers.
4. Philadelphia Phillies
Trade offer: Aidan Miller, Wen-Hui Pan, Chan-Min Park
The Philadelphia Phillies have had a championship core for years, but they haven’t been able to break through and win the Fall Classic. If any team is going to be all in on a World Series push this season, it is Philadelphia because their core is aging and doesn’t have a lot of time left.
The Phillies certainly wouldn’t want to part with Aidan Miller, one of the very best prospects in baseball and the heir apparent to Trea Turner. They just may have to do so in order to land Skubal, though. The Phillies already lead all of baseball in strikeouts. Adding the dominant Skubal to a rotation that includes Zack Wheeler, Cridopher Sanchez, Aaron Nola, and Jesus Luzardo is scary. With the preexisting hitting in Philadelphia, that starting group would be tough to beat come October.
3. Atlanta Braves
Trade offer: Cam Caminiti, Owen Murphy, Herick Hernandez, Jose Perdomo
The Braves don’t have the big league talent to entice Detroit, so they’d have to load up on a huge haul of prospects. Cam Caminiti is their top-ranked prospect, and Owen Murphy, Herick Hernandez, and Jose Perdomo are fifth, 13th, and 22nd in the system, respectively.
The Tigers would surely love to get their hands on a hard-throwing lefty like Caminiti if they moved on from their own ace who fits that description. This is a pitching prospect-based trade package. The Tigers are considering getting rid of one of the best pitchers in baseball, so it is a proposal like the Braves can make that may offer them the best chance at replacing Skubal.
2. Chicago Cubs
Trade offer: Matt Shaw, Josiah Hartshorn, Brandon Birdsell
Matt Shaw’s versatility is a blessing and gives him immense trade value. While currently on the injured list, Shaw has played first base, second base, third base, and all three of the outfield positions for the Cubs. While this is largely because of Shaw’s flexibility, it also stems from the fact that the Cubs haven’t been able to find a clear home in their lineup for their former first-rounder.
Likewise, Josiah Hartshorn doesn’t have a clear path to big league minutes in the near future. Skubal, meanwhile, would slot right into their number one pitching rotation spot, no questions asked.
Giving up Shaw and Hartshorn would be a tough pill to swallow, but if anyone would make it worth it, it is the best pitcher in the league who suits up for Detroit. For the Tigers, this trade package would be intriguing because it would give the team the potential to have the best outfield for years to come. Max Clark and Riley Greene are highly touted outfielders, and the Tigers already have Kevon McGonigle manning shortstop.
1. Los Angeles Dodgers
Trade offer: Zyhir Hope, Roki Sasaki, Sterling Patick
The Dodgers have won back-to-back World Series titles, and they are ready to do whatever it takes to join the elite company of three-peaters. Los Angeles has become this powerhouse because they are willing to outbid any other team for the best players in baseball. Shohei Ohtani, Teoscar Hernandez, Kyle Tucker, Edwin Diaz, Tanner Scott, Roki Sasaki, Blake Snell, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto are a handful of players the team has brought in through free agency in recent years. While the Dodgers seemingly prefer adding talent through free agency, they’ve never historically shied away from the trade market, either.
Many believe that if/when the Dodgers want a player, they will get him. That holds true in trade discussions for Skubal as well because the team has one of the most loaded farm systems in baseball. Plus, the Dodgers can throw in big league talent into a trade if they so choose. This trade offer illustrates just that. Zyhir Hope is one of the best outfield prospects in baseball right now, and Sasaki is already in the majors. Just ahead of last season, many viewed him as the best prospect in the sport.
It could be argued that Sasaki hasn’t lived up to expectations yet, but he already has championship experience and still has sky-high potential. A deal centered around these two might be unbeatable.
