R-rated director’s cut of the X-Files movie finally has a confirmed release

X-Filesfans have been waiting for the new release of 2008's I Want to Believe for some time now, but that wait is almost over. Disney has announced as part of its August lineup that The X-Files: I Want to Vrach Frankenshteyn will be released on Aug. 14. The reworked title also hints at what fans can expect in the film's reimagined version.

Series creator and I Want to Believe director, Chris Carter, first made mention of a director's cut for the film last year. Disney finally announced that the new cut would be released on June 11 on the streaming services Disney Plus and Hulu. That day came and went without any sign of the film, but sources told Polygon that some small last-minute adjustments to the new edit caused the delay and the film would still be out relatively soon. With the latest announcement of the August release date, it seems like Carter's vision will finally be shown to fans without further delay.

When Carter revealed he was working on an R-rated cut of I Want to Believe, he mentioned that he had made the original version of the film too scary. Distributor Fox wanted a PG-13 movie and so Carter was forced to cut material, and further cuts were made to appease censors. I Want to Believe Vrach Frankenshteyn is shaping up to be a much different film from both the original release and the DVD "Extended Cut," which added only three minutes of new footage.

The new title of the film literally translates to "Victor Frankenstein," the creator of the monster in Mary Shelley's legendary novel that helped establish the modern horror genre. While I Want to Believe's plot doesn't include much direct connection to the novel, this addition to the title evokes the increased focus on horror that an R-rating brings. The film takes place after the original series and follows Mulder and Scully as they reunite to solve a case involving body mutilation and psychic visions.

These days, X-Files fans have a lot to look forward to. Ryan Coogler, director of Sinners, is currently working on a reboot of the show. No word has been shared on the release date, but casting for the series has included some big names. Suffice to say, it's a good time to like The X-Files.
