At long last, Avengers: Doomsday has released its first official trailer, and it was nothing short of amazing. While there still isn’t a clear picture of what’s going to happen, the trailer did a good job of hyping up the film as an action-packed spectacle with plenty of heart and drama to match, and when it finally premieres on December 18, the finished product will be even better.
There was plenty to love about the Avengers: Doomsday trailer, and that’s especially true when it comes to its main villain, Doctor Doom. The trailer gave fans their first good look at Doom, albeit it was still rather small in the grand scheme of things, but it still did a good job of establishing him as a major threat who’s more than worthy of closing out the Multiverse Saga. More importantly, though, the trailer all but debunked a major theory people had about Doctor Doom from day one, and that’s nothing but great to see.
Avengers: Doomsday Finally Ends Our Biggest Doctor Doom Fear
When it was first announced that Robert Downey Jr. would play Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, reactions were very mixed, to say the least. As exciting as the concept of having Downey Jr. playing Doom was, there was a fear that this version of Doom would be an evil Tony Stark, as opposed to an accurate adaptation of Doom from the comics, and to many, that would be a disservice to someone often seen as the greatest villain in comic book history.
Fortunately, the Avengers: Doomsday trailer seems to have finally put an end to the idea that Doctor Doom will be an evil Tony Stark. The trailer opens with a bit of dialogue from Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, and he’s notably speaking with a European accent, likely in reference to Doom’s fictional homeland of Latveria. That suggests Doomsday will retain Doom’s history with Latveria, making for a far more accurate depiction of Doom than most of his predecessors.
It’s still unknown why Doctor Doom will look like Tony Stark if he isn’t an alternate version of him, with it only being vaguely stated that there will be an explanation for it in the film, but at the very least, it’s clear that it will be more of a gimmick than anything as Avengers: Doomsday will still make strides to keep Doom accurate to the comics. To what extent is also unclear, but having a Doctor Doom with any semblance of comic book accuracy is still something worth getting excited about.
Avengers: Doomsday Looks More Exciting Than Ever After The Doctor Doom Reveal
One of the biggest talking points surrounding Avengers: Doomsday is whether the film will amount to anything more than cheap fanservice; most of the marketing has focused on how many Marvel actors will be in the film, and with how divisive the MCU has been since Avengers: Endgame, it’s easy to think that Doomsday is focused more on being a crowd pleaser than being a good story. With Doomsday actually putting effort into giving people a comic-accurate Doctor Doom, though, it’s clear that there will be genuine substance to the film, and that will make it far better to watch.
Avengers: Doomsday, and quite possibly the MCU as a whole, is riding on how effective a villain Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom can be with so little build-up to his debut, and if there’s even an attempt at making him comic-accurate to his Latverian origins as opposed to just an evil Tony Stark as many people feared, that’s already a good sign. All it took was a few lines of dialogue from Doctor Doom to make Avengers: Doomsday far more exciting, and its December 18 release date cannot come soon enough.
