The Northern Virginia Science Center Foundation announced on Tuesday QTS Data Centers as a title partner of the future Northern Virginia Science Center in Loudoun County, bolstered by a $1 million gift to the Launch the Future Campaign.
The financial investment aims to support learners of all ages and help build a diverse STEM workforce pipeline in Northern Virginia and beyond, according to a news release from the foundation.
"As a leading provider of digital infrastructure, QTS's partnership underscores Northern Virginia's position as the industry's global hub," Nene Spivy, CEO of the Northern Virginia Science Center Foundation, said in the release. "We are grateful for their investment in our region's educational infrastructure in a way that makes extraordinary STEM learning experiences more accessible for everyone."
The long-planned Northern Virginia Science Center, located in the Kincora Development off Route 28 in Sterling, is under construction with an anticipated opening in mid-2027.
The new facility will be part of the Science Museum of Virginia's statewide network, with additional locations in Richmond and Danville.
QTS' financial support will be recognized through sponsorship of "The Cloud" exhibit and Studio II in the May Innovation Center, the release states. The previously announced May Innovation Center within the broader facility will be a hub for hands-on learning and STEM exploration, officials said.
"The Cloud" is planned as an artistic representation of the basics of digital computing with an overhead installation that visually reacts to guests' cellphone signals.
Studio II will host community-focused programming, including school field trips, camps and various learning opportunities, according to the release.
"This partnership reflects the impact that strong community partnerships can have on the next generation of innovators," Tag Greason, co-CEO of QTS, a Northern Virginia Science Center Foundation advisory board member and a former state delegate, said in the release. "By supporting hands-on STEM education and workforce development opportunities, we are helping students explore careers in technology and digital infrastructure while investing in the long-term success of Northern Virginia."
QTS was one of two developers in the planned Digital Gateway data center campus near Gainesville. The once-approved project was voided after legal challenges.
