A five-month-old puppy who was expected to have found her forever home is back in a Texas animal shelter less than a week after being adopted.
Grace, a 30-pound mixed-breed dog, originally arrived at Dallas Animal Services (DAS) as a stray on May 8. Her story gained traction online after Veronica Petrovich, a volunteer and foster advocate, shared her journey on her Instagram account, @bluemerlehome. While Grace was quickly adopted on May 27, her newfound stability was short-lived; just five days later, her adopter contacted the shelter to return her.
A Heartbreaking Return Through No Fault of Her Own
In a video shared by Petrovich, which can be viewed here, Grace can be seen cowering in the corner of her kennel, visibly overwhelmed by the stressful shelter environment. Staff and volunteers emphasize that the return was through no fault of the puppy.
“As you can see, she is scared in the shelter, and we would love this girl out ASAP,” part of the video’s caption reads.
Resilient, Affectionate, and Ready for a Home
While the shelter environment has understandably frightened Grace, her profile on the DAS website—along with reports from her foster home—paints a much brighter picture of her true personality.
Though initially shy, Grace is described as an affectionate and goofy puppy who simply needs a patient family to help build her confidence. Her foster family notes that she settled in after about a week and revealed herself to be an ideal house companion.

Urgent Need for Adopters at Dallas Animal Services
Grace’s situation highlights a broader crisis at DAS, which currently houses more than 400 dogs. The high volume has made adoptions and foster placements critical to freeing up space for incoming animals.
Shelter staff remain hopeful that the right adopter will look past Grace’s initial shyness and grant her the time and patience she needs to thrive permanently.
