On the surface, the Phoenix Suns’ trade for Miles Bridges seems like a good deal. However, veteran NBA insider Zach Lowe believes it is one of the worst of the offseason so far, and it has nothing to do with his off-the-court drama from a few years ago.
This has been another busy offseason in the NBA. With free agency becoming less of a preferred team-building route for teams, the trade market continues to deliver a lot of change, and this summer has been no different. Superstars like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jaylen Brown, and Kawhi Leonard will be wearing different uniforms next season after being moved in trades.
One under-the-radar deal saw the Suns send the Charlotte Hornets Grayson Allen, Royce O’Neale, and a 2033 first-round pick for Bridges, a 2029 first-round pick, and a 2027 second-round pick. After making a marked improvement in 2025-26, Phoenix is adding a borderline All-Star who can post over 20 points, seven rebounds, and nearly four assists a game at his best.

Seems like a good addition, right? Well, not according to Lowe during a new edition of his The Ringer podcast.
“They gave up a very valuable unprotected 2031 pick and a couple of good role players [for him]. There’s probably an extension for him coming, as there is for Dillon Brooks, who was great for them. I get that they need a forward. He adds a little bit of bounce, a little bit of force, a little bit of verve that they don’t have,” Lowe said.
“He’s just one of those guys where you look at his stats and say, ’20, 5 and 4, that’s a pretty good player.’ And it just doesn’t add up to enough because of his limitations on defense. His limitations as a three-point shooter. I think he’s kind of an underrated passer, but I’m just not sure he’s enough of a winning player to justify that level of commitment.”
Why did Miles Bridges miss the 2022-23 season?
Along with the questions about his defense and three-point shooting, Bridges does come with personal baggage. He was set to get a big payday in free agency in 2022. However, he was arrested on serious domestic charges in June of that year. The accusations were so serious that teams around the league passed on signing him despite his talent and age.
