Not long after Prince William and Kate Middleton released a new portrait of their eldest child, Prince George, to mark his 13th birthday, the Prince and Princess of Wales shared a behind-the-scenes video of George taking part in some of his hobbies while on holiday with his family in Cornwall.
On July 22, the 18-second video clip opened with George in sunglasses waving and smiling at the camera. It also shows the future king on a boat, petting one of the family dogs, playing cricket, and scaling rocks with his younger brother, Prince Louis. In the video, it’s impossible to ignore how much the newly minted teenager resembles his father William.
“Thank you for all the birthday wishes for George today!🎂” the caption read.
In addition to the Prince and Princess of Wales and their three children, the Wales family has two dogs, Orla and Otto, who turned a year old in May. The clip followed the release of George’s birthday portrait, which was shot after Trooping the Colour in June by longtime favorite Wales photographer Matt Porteous.
George is expected to celebrate his birthday privately on Wednesday, with a party reportedly planned to celebrate not only his milestone birthday but also the completion of his studies at Lambrook School. He is also set to follow in his father’s footsteps and attend the prestigious all-boys school Eton College, come September.
Eton is located near Windsor Castle and close to the Wales family home, the eight-bedroom Forest Lodge. “The fact that his family are so close by and he knows the area will help him to feel at home there,” royal biographer Ingrid Seward told Hello!.
As he takes the next step in his educational journey, fellow royal biographer Robert Jobson told the outlet, “George’s upbringing has been very family-orientated, and he’s got lots of people supporting him. He’s going there in quite a warm, confident space.”
Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond told The Mirror that “It’s obviously a huge year ahead for George. Becoming a teenager is still quite a landmark in any young life. But when it means you are also moving schools and essentially leaving home—at least on a part-time basis—it’s pretty momentous.”
George has been described as “incredibly down to earth” by a friend of the family speaking to The Telegraph. “Luckily [he] has two very switched-on parents who have brought him up to talk about his feelings and his fears, and they will only have taken the decision for him to start boarding at Eton after discussing it with him fully, and being certain that this is what he wants,” Bond said. “So he’ll probably view the year ahead with a few nerves, but a lot of excitement.”
She added, “I don’t think we’re going to see George taking part in an increased number of official royal duties in the near future. Quite frankly, he has enough on his plate with his new school and education.”
“It must be a daunting prospect—and hard for a young lad to realize that his destiny, his career, and his life are mapped out already,” Bond continued.
