The Gist

  • Prince George is the eldest son of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
  • The heir apparent to the British throne bears a striking resemblance to his father in photos from the latter’s childhood.
  • George, who turns 13 on July 22, 2026, is set to attend William’s alma mater, Eton, in the fall.

As Britain’s Prince George grows up in the public eye, many royal fans might feel as if they’re seeing double. The firstborn son of Prince William and Kate Middleton could pass as his father’s twin if he were to time-travel back to the 1980s. Their resemblance goes beyond their appearance, extending to their mannerisms—when they stand side by side at an event like Trooping the Colour, their smiles and postures are practically identical.

In late 2026, George will begin his studies at William’s alma mater, the prestigious Eton College, continuing the parallels between his life and his father’s. “Eton was a much-needed haven for William,” royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith told People when the school choice was announced. “It will give George a rigorous education that he will need for his role.”

Another source close to the family told the outlet, “George has always wanted to follow in his dad’s footsteps.”

The start of his teen years is sure to deliver more photos that bear a dizzying similarity to pictures of William when he was George’s age. Ahead, revisit a collection of photos where Prince George looks just like Prince William as a kid.

Just shy of his first birthday, a young Prince William steadied himself with the help of parents Princess Diana and Prince Charles while posing for photos on a picnic blanket. The picture was taken during a 1983 royal tour of New Zealand—William’s first overseas tour.

Prince George, too, took an early trip to New Zealand in April 2014. Like his father William in the earlier picture, George was just under 1 year old during the royal family’s visit to Wellington. He’s posing inside Government House, while William posed outside on its lawn 31 years prior.

Wimbledon Debut

Going to the Wimbledon Tennis Championships is a longtime royal family tradition. William made his debut at the star-studded sporting event in 1991, at 9 years old, sitting alongside his mother Diana.

George was his father’s mirror image during his own Wimbledon debut, which came in 2022. Like his dad did in 1991, George dressed up for the occasion in a crisp suit. The child’s navy outfit twinned with mom Kate’s polka dot dress.

Smile and Wave

In October 1991, William and younger brother Prince Harry adorably waved to royal fans while standing on the deck of the Royal Yacht Britannia. In May 2025, George sat between sister Princess Charlotte and brother Prince Louis as they waved during a military procession to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day. The simple gesture offered another moment where the similarities between father and son were undeniable.

Hand in Hand

When walking with little ones, royals are just like the rest of us: They’ll hold hands with their kids to make sure no one wanders off. In the 2018 photo, George and Charlotte hold onto William as they arrive at the hospital with their father following the birth of their younger sibling, Louis. The 1989 snapshot, meanwhile, shows William and Harry holding onto their mother, Diana, as they arrive at the wedding of Katharine Hussey, otherwise known as Lady Brooke.

While George favors blue suits over the gray ones that dominated a young William’s wardrobe, the royal relatives still look alike when they’re dressed in their formal finery. Take the parallels between Prince William’s sideways glance on his first day at Eton in September 1995 and Prince George’s similar expression during Trooping the Colour 2024.

William and George were style twins across the decades, as both wore a red plaid shirt in their early years. Besides the matching outfits, the young princes radiate the same playful energy in their candid photos—taken in 1985 and 2017, respectively.

Twin Grins

The regal smile is in their DNA. Prince William had a rare casual moment while go-karting in July 1988 at Buckmore Park Playscape, captured in a portrait of him grinning while holding his helmet. Fast-forward to Trooping the Colour 2025 when Prince George had a similar energy while greeting crowds during the annual parade.

William’s photo also bears a clear resemblance to his daughter, Charlotte. A royal fan showed him the striking similarities in a 2023 interaction uploaded to TikTok.

Happy Kids

William couldn’t hide his smile while unwrapping a treat during a June 1991 outing with mom Diana and brother Harry. In December 2022, George had the same cheerful spirit while strolling with sister Charlotte at the annual “Together at Christmas” Carol Service. The photos also show how George tends to part his hair to his left, while William often parted his to his right.
