WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — D.C. police are investigating a double shooting in the Petworth community. This marks the third shooting reported in the District since midnight.

E. L. Haynes staff said the shooting happened outside the building, and two individuals approached staff seeking help. They say staff rendered first aid and coordinated emergency services.

Neighbor Aliza Gottlieb said the gunshots sounded “very scary.”

“We were right in the front, and we heard very clear gunshots,” she said. “It’s very intense.”

Gottlieb said the shooting being so close to a school made the incident even more alarming.

“I did hear a little bit of emotional distress sounds, but I, I wasn’t even sure, honestly, if they were gunshots at first when I first heard them,” she said.

Gottlieb said the violence around the children is “sickening.”

“Terrible. Gun control’s necessary,” she said.

The shooting comes just hours after a teenage boy was shot in his head, about two miles away on Michigan Avenue NW.

Officers also said a passing vehicle was struck by gunfire, but the driver was not injured.

Neighbor Kesi Chestnut said the location near the hospital may have helped the victim receive immediate medical care.

“It’s unfortunate, especially in an up-and-coming neighborhood like this, but it’s fortunate that they were by some hospitals. It’s just with juveniles and youth finding trouble is easy for them in the city,” she said.
