The Philadelphia Phillies left Wednesday’s 9-5 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers with Don Mattingly expressing confidence despite dropping the series. The interim manager made clear that recent results have not changed his expectations.
The Phillies opened the three-game set with a 10-7 victory before losing the final two contests. The Dodgers followed a 2-1 win Tuesday by completing the series Wednesday at Citizens Bank Park.
The loss dropped Philadelphia to 56-47, leaving them second in the National League East, four games behind the division-leading Atlanta Braves. Regardless, the Phillies remain in postseason position.

NBC Sports Philadelphia shared Mattingly’s postgame comments Wednesday on X, formerly Twitter, after Los Angeles secured the series.

Mattingly’s confidence reflects Philadelphia’s turnaround since replacing Rob Thomson on April 28. After opening the season 9-19, the Phillies have gone 47-28 under the interim manager.
The statement carried added significance against a Dodgers team that owns baseball’s best record at 65-38. Although Los Angeles claimed two of three games, Philadelphia showed it can compete with one of the sport’s top clubs.
The series also underscored the importance of execution. The Phillies followed Tuesday’s costly baserunning mistake by allowing Wednesday’s game to get away in the late innings.
Philadelphia now turns its attention to a series with the New York Yankees beginning Friday as the August 3 trade deadline approaches. The front office must decide whether adding pitching or another contributor would strengthen a roster that has recovered from a difficult start.
For Mattingly and the Phillies, the formula remains simple. They must play cleaner baseball and capitalize on their opportunities. Despite consecutive losses, his remarks reflected confidence in a team firmly positioned in the National League playoff race.
