IDAHO FALLS — Have you wanted to add a four-legged furry friend to your family? Now is your chance this weekend. An Idaho Falls pet supply store is inviting the community to an adoption event.
On Saturday, July 25, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., PetSmart will have at least four different adoption groups present, including Loving Hearts Cat Rescue, Idaho Falls Animal Shelter, Bingham County Humane Society and Humane Society of the Upper Valley.
“I know that going to an animal shelter can be really sad and really heartbreaking for a lot of people, so holding this adoption event at a pet store is really great exposure not only for the animals but for people to kind of see how much we are willing to do for these animals,” said Bailee Ricks, an adoption ambassador with PetSmart.
There will be at least 20 animals for adoption, like dogs and cats. There will be vet clinics and animal control officers to provide education on what their job entails.
Slithers and Scales Rescue will be there with reptiles too.
“Last time they came, they had an iguana, gecko, bearded dragon and a leopard gecko,” said Ricks. “So we are going to have some crazy critters!”
At the event, there will be training and grooming seminars. Training will provide kid and dog safety.
“How to introduce a new dog to your kids, how to make sure your kids stay safe with dogs; just making sure that parents are prepared and know how to safely help their kids approach dogs,” Ricks told EastIdahoNews.com.
A grooming demonstration from a groomer is planned. She’ll teach people about different fur types and discuss which grooming tools to use for which dogs.
Ricks added that it’s National Adoption Week at PetSmart. It has a food drive, toy drive, and a raffle. Ricks explained how the food drive works.
“We’re doing it a little bit differently than normal food drives where you just kind of give a can to a cashier,” she said.
She said customers can take bags prefilled with pet food and toys to the cashier. The bags are $2, $5 and $10.
Customers can also donate pet toys for the toy drive. The drive goes until July 26. The raffle entries will close on July 25, and winners will be drawn on July 26. Tickets for the raffle are one for $2. Prizes include different things like Possibly Picasso gift cards, museum tickets, Chili’s gift cards, two riding activities from Maple Springs Ranch, and more.
Ricks said she is looking forward to the event this Saturday and encouraged people to come check it out.
“Maybe you can’t adopt, but you can donate and support them, and it just makes such a huge difference for the lives of those animals,” she said.
