BLACKFOOT — It’s a warm day in One Beat Wellness Studio, and Keshia Polatis is cocooned in a silk cloth.
Suspended in the hammock-like apparatus, she gently leans forward and flips herself upside down. As she hangs there, her back stretches out and she takes in a deep, cleansing breath.
What she’s performing is called aerial yoga. And her business, One Beat Wellness Studio, is now offering classes on it.
“(Aerial yoga) is really playful. A lot of people come to class and they’re like, ‘I haven’t played like this since I was a kid.’ It just brings people back to that childlike joy,” Polatis told EastIdahoNews.com.
Polatis said you don’t need any experience to start doing aerial yoga. So far, 100 people have come to try it since she started offering classes over a month ago. She said people always leave smiling.
Polatis said before she started doing group fitness classes, she tried working out at home or going to the gym, but it didn’t work out too well. At home, the workouts would often get cut short, and at the gym she just didn’t know what to do.
“Me and so many people that come here say, ‘I actually look forward to my workouts now, and I’ve been able to stay consistent with it,'” Polatis said.
That was the concept that started One Beat Wellness Studio about three years ago. A group of women decided Blackfoot needed a space where people could get healthy together.
“There was a need in the community for a place for women to not only get healthy together physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, but just to gather and create a sense of community,” said Leslie Simmons, a yoga instructor at One Beat Wellness Studio.
And the community is thriving. Polatis said that once people are done with classes they often hang out at the studio or outside on the sidewalk.
“One Beat Wellness Studio is more than a place where people come to work out — it’s really a community where people can come to get support in their wellness journey and make lots of friends,” Polatis said.
The studio offers classes on weight training, cardio, Zumba, barre, pilates and yoga as well as other events like retreats, soundbaths and breathework. It also offers kids’ classes, where they not only play but learn mindfulness and meditation.
“Thats really what this space is about — we’re always cheering each other on at every stage and age,” Simmons said.
The studio is at 30 West Bridge Street, Blackfoot. More information on the studio and classes can be found on its website.
