Pensacola can now see 'The Odyssey' in Dolby Cinema, upgraded IMAX

Fans of “The Hobbit” wait for “The Desolation of Smaug” to begin at the midnight showing Dec. 12, 2013, at Penn Cinema Riverfront. Penn Ketchum says the theater’s IMAX screen helps draw fans and keep their losses lower than the rest of the theater industry.

Upgrades at Pensacola’s AMC Bayou 15 theater are officially complete, and moviegoers can watch these movies in Dolby Cinema or IMAX with lasers.

Upgrades at Pensacola’s AMC Bayou 15 theater are officially complete, and movie buffs can watch Christopher Nolan’s latest highly acclaimed movie, “The Odyssey,” in Dolby Cinema or IMAX with lasers

Renovations for the Dolby Cinema auditorium are finally complete. The format caters to a slightly different moviegoing experience than its bigger-than-life IMAX counterpart.

It boasts similar upgrades to visual clarity and expanded color gamut, but uses tighter aspect ratios and higher dynamic contrast to create exceptionally atmospheric experiences. And it comes with the added bonus of recliners, which is a first for Pensacola’s AMC theater.

AMC Theatres wrapped up its IMAX upgrades during the first week of July, replacing the old 2K projectors with 4K projectors and upgrading seating options. The screen itself remains the same, so moviegoers will still see a cropped version of “The Odyssey.”

What movies can you see in Dolby Cinema, IMAX with laser?

Here are the current movies you can catch in Dolby Cinema and IMAX with laser:

  • “The Odyssey”
  • “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”

How much are tickets?

IMAX with laser and Dolby Cinema movie tickets run $6 more than regular prices:

  • Adults: $19.49 regular | $16.79 for discount matinee
  • Kids: $16.49 regular | $14.30 for discount matinee
  • Seniors: $17.99 regular | $15.59 for discount matinee

What is IMAX with laser?

IMAX with laser is AMC’s upgraded IMAX experience. It ditches the dual 2K projectors in favor of 4K laser projectors that offer brighter highlights, deeper shadows and a wider color gamut compared to the original.

IMAX screens are typically taller, aiming for 1:43:1 or 1.90:1 aspect ratios. Larger screens make IMAX the preferred format for larger-than-life movies where audiences want to feel lost and immersed in the movie.

What is Dolby Cinema?

Dolby Cinema is built around Dolby Vision HDR projection and Dolby Atmos sound. It is a premium format that is optimized for smaller auditoriums and caters to different aspect ratios compared to IMAX.

The format utilizes dual 4K laser projectors using Dolby Vision HRD, which is designed for inky, “true” blacks, giving it an edge over IMAX with laser in terms of contrast.

Dolby Atmos can create greater immersion, using up to dozens of speaker feeds to create a sonic 3D space for moviegoers.

Dolby Cinema offers a more premium experience for movies that create a thick atmosphere, are visually rich or are animated, where precision matters more than raw screen size.

AMC Classic Pensacola 18 theater fate still uncertain

The AMC Classic Pensacola 18 multiplex was sold for $6 million in March, according to CoStar, a commercial real estate analytics company.

The theater’s performance had seen declining experience, according to the report, making its fate after the sale unclear.

AMC still had approximately two years remaining on its lease at the time of the sale, but the report indicates that the location could face closure once the lease expires.

The multiplex was sold to Destiny Worship Center, which is a Christian ministry based in Miramar Beach, Florida. It has locations in Navarre, Fort Walton Beach, Destin, Crestview, Freeport and Panama City Beach.
