E-bike riders are now required to have either a driver's license or a NJ e-bike license. And depending on the type of e-bike, some owners will also have to insure and register their bikes to avoid fines.

The new set of requirements do not apply to low-speed electric scooters.

What e-bikes must comply with new requirements?

According to NJ Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC), motorized bicycles with a throttle capable of exceeding 20 mph must be registered and insured. The max allowed speed for e-bikes is 28 mph.

Low-speed e-bikes with a motor that can assist in reaching a maximum speed of up to 20 mph need registration, but not insurance.

Do I need a license to use my e-bike?

Those driving an electric bicycle must be at least 15 years old and possess either a driver's license or an e-bike license for those younger than 17.

When on the road, riders must follow all of NJ traffic laws.

What is a low-speed e-bike?

New Jersey law defines low-speed e-bike as a "two-wheeled bicycle with pedals where the motor assists only while pedaling," and its maximum speed is 20 mph.

Low-speed electric bikes don't need insurance, but they need registration.

Low-speed electric scooters, defined as having a floorboard and handlebars, no pedal, and a top speed of less than 19 mph do not require insurance, registration or licensing.

How to get a NJ e-bike registration? What documents do I need?

To register your electric bike with NJ MVC, you must schedule a registration appointment and bring proof of ownership, which can be a purchase receipt or an affidavit. The first year of registration is free.

Once you register your e-bike, you will get a sticker that must be affixed to the bike.

What NJ roads have bikes bans? Can you ride your e-bike on NJ Turnpike, Garden State Parkway?

New Jersey Department of Transportation restricts bicycle traffic on the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, Atlantic City Expressway and interstate roads in various towns.

You also cannot ride your e-bike on other specific roads, including:

• Route 1 in Trenton.
• Route 18 in Wall, Neptune, Tinton Falls, Colt Neck, Freehold, Marlboro and Old Bridge.
• Route 29 in Trenton.
• Route 208 in Fair Lawn, Glen Rock, Franklin Lakes, Wycoff, Oakland, and Hawthorne Boro.
• Route 42 in Washington Township, Deptford, Runnemede, Gloucester Township, and Bellmawr.
