“Everybody talks about shooting, that’s not the main priority right now,” Riley said. “It’s another playmaker.”
This is a massive development, as Miami has been linked to several shooters, such as Dallas Mavericks guard Klay Thompson. It has been a natural narrative after the Heat lost Tyler Herro, Norman Powell, and more through trades and free agency. However, a playmaker does make sense, as the shooting isn’t as bad as most believe.
In fact, it could signal more about Miami’s plans for James than anything else.
How Pat Riley’s Comments Affect the LeBron James Rumors
The Heat are waiting for James to make a decision, and Riley’s comments were eye-opening. The four-time NBA champion is one of the best playmakers in the league over the last two decades. If the Heat team president believes playmaking is their biggest need, this directly correlates to their pursuit of James.
Miami will likely add another shooter still, such as Thompson, but it signals that the team is looking for a James-level playmaker. If the 41-year-old superstar were to join the Heat, he would immediately become the “point guard,” leading the offense. Meanwhile, Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo would take hte load off James defensively.
This would allow James to maximize his current form. Riley’s comments were almost a pitch to James himself, going public about the NBA legend’s fit on the offense, while calling him the top priority. However, if the Heat miss out on James, it could signal the team’s next move for someone like DeMar DeRozan.
To this point, it has been three weeks since James became an NBA free agent for likely the final time. Miami is heavily interested in signing James, and Riley is not being shy about the team’s desires. After all, this is arguably the best basketball player in NBA history.
What’s Next for the Miami Heat With LeBron James
Riley has made Miami’s top priority clear, and it directly relates to James. While adding another shooter or signing DeRozan would be very beneficial to the team, Miami should wait for James to make his decision. James would take the Heat from contenders to favorites in the Eastern Conference. In fact, there isn’t anyone in the NBA that would fit the current Heat team better than James.
