An airline passenger got the surprise of a lifetime when he looked out of his window while flying over the Himalayas and spotted one of the most famous landmarks on Earth.
In a viral Instagram post shared on July 5 by user @itispradip_, the traveler captured a breathtaking view from his window seat while flying over Tibet, leaving social media users amazed.
The short clip shows the aircraft passing above the Himalayan mountain range before the poster zooms in on a particular peak. In on-screen text, he identifies the mountain as Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world.
The video’s caption reads: “POV [point of view]: you’re flying right next to Mt Everest.”
The stunning aerial view quickly caught the attention of viewers, with many stopping to admire the rare sight of the world’s highest mountain from above the clouds.
Mount Everest sits on the border between Nepal and China and reaches a height of 8,848.86 meters. The mountain continues to grow slowly over time, making it not only the highest point on Earth but one that is still changing.
Everest remains one of the most challenging climbs in the world. Reaching the summit can take around 10 weeks and requires extensive training as well as specialist equipment. The first successful ascent, according to the BBC, was completed in 1953 by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, a milestone that cemented the mountain’s place in history.
However, Everest also faces ongoing environmental challenges. Over the years, rubbish and human waste have accumulated on the mountain as climbing activity has increased. To help tackle the issue, new regulations require climbers to carry their waste back to base camp, an effort aimed at reducing pollution and helping protect the region.
The post has resonated with audiences around the world. Since being shared, the video has generated more than 1.1 million views and over 66,000 likes on Instagram, turning a routine flight into a viral social media moment.
One user, Rocky_horjus, commented: “I made this flight a few years ago, just to see Mt. Everest from close. It became one of my best travel memories ever.”
