Training camp is just days away for the Carolina Panthers, and starting right tackle Taylor Moton has been dealing with a serious health scare that will keep him off the field to open camp and reportedly cost him the start of the regular season.
Carolina confirmed Tuesday that Moton has been placed on the non-football injury list and put on blood thinners after doctors discovered blood clots in his lung in late June.

Moton is responding well to treatment, according to the latest team report. He’ll be assessed daily by Carolina’s medical staff, and the belief around the building is he’ll play at some point in 2026, though no firm timetable exists.
Ari Meirov tweeted, “Moton was diagnosed with blood clots in his lung and will miss the start of the 2026 NFL season. He was immediately placed on blood thinners, is responding well to treatment and will be assessed daily by the team’s medical staff.”
Blood clots can be unpredictable. While some players recover quickly, others miss serious time, just like New England Patriots’ Christian Barmore did in 2024.
The timing hurts a Carolina offensive line already dealing with injuries. Left tackle Ikem Ekwonu is still recovering from a torn patellar tendon from January’s playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams, making his status for the season opener unclear.
To fill the gaps, rookie Monroe Freeling and free-agent signing Rasheed Walker will likely compete for the starting tackle spots, with Stone Forsythe serving as the backup.
The 31-year-old started 15 of 16 games last season and has never missed a game since Carolina drafted him in the second round in 2017. He remains one of the most durable tackles in the league, playing 145 consecutive games.
Last August, he signed a two-year, $44 million contract extension that keeps him with the team through 2027. The Panthers open the season on Sep. 13 against the Chicago Bears. Whether Moton will be ready remains uncertain, but they have about seven weeks before the opener to sort out their tackle rotation.
