Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta has been fully cleared for training camp after an injury derailed his 2025 campaign.
LaPorta only appeared in nine games last season after he suffered a fully herniated disc and was placed on injured reserve in November, per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk.
After a microdiscectomy and the ensuing recovery, the 25-year-old is ready to rejoin the team, as reported by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
The timing is ideal, as the Lions veterans are set to report to training camp next week.
What Does Sam Laporta Bring to the Lions?
LaPorta is gearing up for his fourth professional season after he was drafted early in the second round in 2023 out of tight end-producing machine Iowa.
He made an immediate impact with 86 receptions for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns in his rookie year, which was good enough to be named Pro Bowler and second-team All-Pro.
As a second-year pro, he added to that success with 60 catches, 726 yards and seven touchdowns.
His 2025 campaign was also shaping up to be a successful one.
In essentially half a season, he had 40 catches, 489 yards and three touchdowns.
In 2026, he’ll be hoping to return to that level of production.
After the season, he becomes an unrestricted free agent.
