The Cleveland Browns still have not settled on a starting quarterback, and training camp is expected to decide one of the league’s most intriguing position battles. While Shedeur Sanders has generated plenty of momentum this offseason, the race may not be as tilted in his favor as recent headlines suggest.

According to one Browns insider, the competition remains wide open. In fact, the veteran many believed was losing ground may still have the inside track entering camp.

Nathan Zegura Says Deshaun Watson Holds a Narrow Edge Over Shedeur Sanders for Cleveland Browns QB1 Job

Speaking on July 22 on 92.3 The Fan, Cleveland analyst Nathan Zegura said he believes Deshaun Watson currently has a slight advantage over Sanders in the Browns QB competition. While acknowledging Sanders’ offseason improvement, Zegura pointed to Watson’s health and physical condition as key reasons the veteran remains the frontrunner, for now.

“I think Deshaun Watson has a slight edge right now. His arm looks strong, his body looks great, you can tell his mobility is back… (Deshaun & Shedeur) are both very much in the competition.”

This analysis arrives after what has been an exciting spring for the Browns’ rookie quarterback, having received high praise from several members of their coaching staff, particularly quarterbacks coach Mike Bajakian who has described Sanders as being “blown away” with the former Buffalo player’s field awareness and football acumen.

Such improvements have led to renewed hope for Sanders heading into his second year in the league after a somewhat erratic first-year season with 1,400 passing yards, seven touchdown passes and ten interceptions.

The veteran signal-caller is recovering from several injuries sustained throughout the year, and according to Zegura, physical improvements are evident. Watson’s arm strength and movement reportedly look much closer to pre-injury form, giving the Browns confidence that he can still compete for the starting job despite Sanders’ rapid development.

HC Monken has also resisted naming a starter, repeatedly saying the competition needs to continue into training camp. As for Sanders, the encouraging offseason has clearly narrowed the gap, however, for Watson, staying healthy has kept him firmly in the conversation.
