Packers just solved one of their biggest long-term defensive puzzles with a smart contract move

Green Bay locked up defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt with a three-year, $57 million extension that fits the roster perfectly.

The Green Bay Packers secured a key piece of their defensive interior for years to come. On Monday, the Packers reached a three-year, $57 million contract extension with defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt, per NFL insider Jordan Schultz. The deal includes a $20 million signing bonus, locking Wyatt in through four total seasons when combined with his existing fifth-year option for 2026.

Wyatt was already set to make $12.938 million in 2026 under his rookie deal’s fifth-year option, meaning the total commitment now sits at $69.938 million over four years, averaging just under $17.5 million annually, even though the new money comes at $19 million a year.

Structure that works for both sides

The big aspect is how the Packers managed to keep the deal reasonable given Wyatt’s profile. He was an older prospect coming out of college and is already 28 years old. He also wasn’t a full-time player throughout the first four years of his career, which complicated the negotiation.

Finding a three-year extension instead of a longer commitment at this price point is an excellent outcome for Green Bay. The $20 million in guarantees gives Wyatt financial security while allowing the Packers flexibility to move on after two seasons if needed. That’s a significant structural advantage for general manager Brian Gutekunst, who has consistently prioritized roster flexibility in his contract negotiations.

Wyatt suffered an ankle injury last season, but he still produced 22 pressures despite the setback. Over the last three seasons, since becoming a meaningful part of the defensive tackle rotation in 2023, Wyatt has generated 99 pressures. He is still a highly effective interior rusher, and that production justified keeping him in Green Bay rather than letting him test the open market next offseason.

This extension also addresses a roster reality the Packers couldn’t ignore. Green Bay doesn’t have a natural long-term replacement for Wyatt if he had departed in free agency. The Packers signed veteran Javon Hargrave to a two-year deal this offseason, but Hargrave is an older player himself and doesn’t represent a lasting solution. Meanwhile, third-round pick Chris McClellan projects as a developmental piece with a learning curve ahead of him.

That left Wyatt as the No. 1 defensive tackle in terms of long-term outlook for the Packers. Letting him walk would have created a hole the front office wasn’t prepared to fill, especially with no guarantee of finding comparable interior pressure at a similar cost.

A deal that fits the bigger picture

The Packers needed to retain Wyatt without overcommitting resources. A three-year extension at $19 million per season, with limited guarantees relative to the total value, accomplishes exactly that. The structure is nothing prohibitive for a team managing its salary cap carefully, and it gives Green Bay stability along the defensive line heading into 2026 and beyond.

For Wyatt, the deal gives some level of security and stability after a season affected by a serious injury.

Now, it's a matter of finding out who the next contract extension candidate will be, and tight end Tucker Kraft immediately comes to mind.
