A routine traffic stop in northern Michigan quickly escalated, ending with a foot chase, Taser arrest and a major suspected meth seizure.

A northern Michigan traffic stop ended with a foot chase, troopers using a Taser and the seizure of more than 30 grams of suspected methamphetamine, according to Michigan State Police.

The incident began shortly after 3 p.m. July 10 in Onaway when troopers from the Michigan State Police Alpena Post tried to stop an SUV that authorities said was being driven without insurance. The driver sped away, then later ran from troopers before he was arrested.

Onaway is a small community in Presque Isle County, about 60 miles northwest of Alpena.

Investigators said they first spotted the SUV traveling east on M-68 before the driver pulled into a gas station parking lot. When troopers attempted the traffic stop, the driver sped up and failed to stop. Although they did not pursue the SUV, troopers were able to keep it in sight as it continued traveling at normal speeds.

State police later found the SUV on Beech Street and saw a man matching the driver's description running while carrying a black box. After the man ignored commands to stop, troopers used a Taser to take him into custody.

MSP said they found more than 30 grams of suspected methamphetamine inside the black box.

The man is charged with third-degree fleeing and eluding, two counts of resisting and obstructing police, delivery or manufacture of methamphetamine, and driving without insurance.

The investigation is ongoing, and Michigan State Police said the man's name is not being released at this time.
