Bo Bichette is playing coy with his trade deadline answer
Bo Bichette is a smart guy and not just for taking a contract that gives him all of the power plus an extra $5 million if he decides to leave the Mets this offseason. He was asked about the chances of him waiving his no-trade clause.
“That hasn’t been brought to my attention right now, so I don’t have an answer.”
It’s actually a good answer to brush off the question. I, maybe foolishly so, buy it. The Mets didn’t ask Brandon Nimmo about his no-trade clause until they had an actual deal agreed upon with the Texas Rangers. The less time you give the player to think about it, the more likely it seems they’ll flap their hands around with a literal wave.
What are the chances the Mets actually trade Bichette? It’s going to take Steve Cohen to write a check, something is rumored to be less likely to do. If the Mets truly have any interest in having him around next year, they might just want to hold him and let things play out naturally. I don’t see a trade return valuable enough to get the Mets to deal him.
Zach Thornton has been replaced by Zac Thornton
Pulling a Pete Alonso, Zach Thornton shall henceforth be known as Zac Thornton.
You’ll probably remember how Pete was a Peter during his days as a slugging Mets prospect. He knocked off the “r” before becoming a superstar. Thornton is dropping the “h” after three major league starts.
It’s not exactly Fausto Carmona morphing into another Robert Hernandez. Thornton will pitch for the Mets against Brandon Sproat on Tuesday. A chance to go against a former Mets player, it might not be the only time this week we do.
The Dodgers might have Edwin Diaz back for the weekend trip to Flushing
Edwin Diaz hasn’t pitched since April and the timing of a possible return is wild. Now four rehab appearances deep, the Dodgers could have him back just in time for an awkward return. He is trending toward getting activated this weekend when the Dodgers visit the Mets.
Diaz is bound to get booed by most. However, with the state of the current roster, cheers will come along too.
Diaz’s link to cockfighting back in Puerto Rico didn’t become the major story many believed it would. Nonetheless, we should expect fans who still feel spurned to come in fully-feathered as a way to mock him and be seen without having to be heard.
