A new rumor seemingly makes the New York Mets a perfect trade partner for the Milwaukee Brewers as they look to bolster their roster to make a rare appearance in the World Series this fall.
The Mets and Brewers are in very different positions heading into Tuesday night’s games. For New York, the nightmare they endured in the second half last season has continued into 2026, and they own the fourth-worst record in MLB (42-59). It is the complete opposite situation for Milwaukee, because to the surprise of many around the sport, they own the best record in the league at 63-37.
Yet, for as good as this season has been, the Brewers need to bolster their roster if they really want to be a serious threat to the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers. A team only a half game behind them in the standings.
Making a bold move for Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal would do a lot to make them better built to compete with LA in a playoff series. And as a team with one of the best farm systems in baseball, they have the chips to make a trade a reality. However, according to Fan Sided’s Robert Murray, they are unlikely to jump into the Skubal sweepstakes.

The Brewers not attempting a trade for Skubal is a bit surprising. However, it isn’t shocking because he will be a free agent after this season and Milwaukee will not be in the running for him in free agency. However, they could still use more pitching, and the Mets have some arms that might interest the Brew Crew.
Although he is having a horrible season, Murray claims starter Freddy Peralta will still get “significant interest” from other teams because of his pedigree as a two-time All-Star and Cy Young finalist last year. Would the Brewers be interested in bringing him back for the stretch run? They won’t be sending out what the Mets forked over in a trade for him this winter. A reunion for a lower cost than they paid in the offseason may appeal to Milwaukee.
If they don’t want a reunion with Peralta, Murray also expects Clay Holmes to draw a lot of interest before the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline. Although he hit a wall and struggled in the second half last season, he has been otherwise very good as a starter over the last two years. Like Peralta, the two-time All-Star would also be a rental, since he is expected to opt out of the final year of his contract to return to free agency in the winter.
Either pitcher would be more in the Brewers’ price range. Plus, you can never have enough relief pitching, and New York has some nice arms that will be available. Furthermore, the Mets would love to get prospects from one of the best minor league systems in baseball. It sure seems like the Mets and Brewers are perfect trade partners for one another.
